Esther 7:1-10 // Chapter 7 of Esther is action packed and full of suspense. Esther is on a life or death mission to save her people. While throwing a feast for King Ahasuerus and Haman she finally makes her move, which includes a big reveal: her identity as a Jew. After keeping this secret for roughly the past five years, Esther is now going to reveal her identity to the king, hoping that this will help change the fate of her people. Everything is riding on her request. It’s a life or death situation, not only for her, but for all Jews in the Persian Empire.
What chapter 7 reveals for us, in the larger context of the unfolding story in Esther, is the interplay between human responsibility and God’s sovereignty. God is in control, he has a plan, and is moving that plan forward and, even though Esther has no idea what that plan is, she is responding to what’s happening and rising to the challenge before her. Chapter 7 invites us to reflect and consider how this interplay works in our lives. It also provides an encouraging reminder that God is at work in our lives, he has a plan, we are in it, we have a role to play, and it’s a good plan!
