The Broadway League has announced that theatres will remain closed for the rest of the year.
Refunds will be issued for all tickets purchased for musicals and plays scheduled until January 3.
This is the fourth time broadway shows have been postponed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
Performances were suspended on 12 March when 31 different productions were running, including eight in preview.
“The safety of our cast, crew, orchestra, and audience is our highest priority and we look forward to returning to our stages only when it’s safe to do so,” Thomas Schumacher, Broadway League board chairman.
The League is now working with state officials to find the safest way to reopen theatres, which are often tightly packed.
Proposed measures include enhanced cleaning procedures and revamped backstage protocols.
“We are determined to bring back the people who rely on this industry for their livelihood and to welcome back all those who love this vital part of New York City,” Charlotte St. Martin, Broadway League President.
Broadway’s theatres are one of New York’s top tourist attractions and were worth $14.7B to the city’s economy last year.
