The MTV Video Music Awards are set to take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on August 30.
The announcement was made by New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo, during a live video briefing.
MTV said that the event will have a limited capacity or potentially no audience, and will follow safety guidelines.
The VMAs will be the first major awards show to take place in a physical venue since coronavirus lockdowns began.
Other awards shows have been taking place online since social distancing restrictions were introduced in March.
“We’re elated to bring the 2020 ‘VMAs’ back to NYC, the cultural mecca of the world where music and entertainment are woven into the DNA,” Bruce Gillmer, President of Music at ViacomCBS Media Networks.
The VMAs is one of the biggest annual events in the music industry and features performances from top stars.
MTV announced that some performances will take place at iconic locations around New York.
Performers for this year’s ceremony are still unknown, but more details expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
