The Queen Consort is the new Colonel of the Grenadier Guards. Queen Camilla is the second-ever female Colonel in the Grenadier Guards’ 366-year history. Her Majesty takes over a role left vacant after the Duke of York was forced to give up all his military appointments. The Monarch is always the Colonel-in-Chief of the Grenadier Guards. Queen Camilla is known as the Regimental Colonel. The role has been held by other consorts, including Prince Philip and Prince Albert. Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II served as Regimental Colonel for ten years while heir to the throne. Her appointment in 1942 was the first time a woman had taken the role.
